[Closed] Moodle Upgrades was created by Bruce Rick
Is there a best way to upgrade Moodle, from like 2.8.1 to 2.8.2. Is there a best practice or procedure anyone suggests? When I just do a new update of moodle it causes all sorts of problems. I'm wondering if it would be better to uninstall joomdla (keeping all of the configurations information though), then upgrading Moodle and re-installing Joomdle. Any suggestions for the best way to do this would be great. It's just always a good idea to keep up with the latest version if possible.

Thanks,
Bruce

You say it causes all sorts of problems. What types of problems are you experiencing?

When I upgrade Moodle I just:
- upload new version and unzip
- rename folders
- copy config file to new version
- copy joomdle plugins (and any other non standard ones) from old moodle folder to new one
- run upgrade

I have never had any problems related to Joomdle in the upgrades.

Well, from 2.8.1 to 2.8.2 I have gotten the XRC error directly at the login, so I can't get into the front end of Joomla, or anything in Moodle at all, so I can't get into the system. My first thought was maybe I need to disable Joomdle enrollment before installing the new version of Moodle but I'm just not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bruce

XRC Error? Not sure what this is, perhaps Antonio does. It is not likely that enrollment would cause a problem because it is only activated when somebody subscribes to a course / buys a course. You will have single sign on plugins that are active during login, etc. If you are referring to XML-RPC errors, did you add all the functions in to the Joomdle service in Moodle?

Regardless of the plugin, functions, etc., if you are concerned that Joomdle might be causing a problem, just log into your Joomla backend, visit Extensions/Plugin Manager, search for Joomdle and disable all Joomdle plugins. Joomdle will no longer be active. You can go about your Moodle upgrade and validate Joomla and Moodle are functioning correctly on their own before you start on Joomdle.

Yes, that is the error I've been getting. Then I can't log into Moodle at all and I end up stuck. I think I'm going to try turning everything off in the Joomla backend and see how things go. I just don't want to get stuck and then have to work my way back through the system and perform a backup if I don't have to. I keep running into this when I attempt to upgrade from 2.8.1 to 2.8.2 right now. I'm thinking this will work. I was just wondering if there was any specific procedure anyone followed when they upgraded Moodle with Joomdle installed.

Thanks,
Bruce

Given they are XML-RPC errors, I would (once you have Moodle and Joomla working on their own):
- ensure you XML-RPC installed and enabled on your server
- ensure you have added all the Joomdle functions

As for procedures to upgrade, Antonio has mentioned some above.

I understand that part, but the problem is that once the upgrade for Moodle is installed, I can't get into Moodle. It won't let me through to the backend to make the adjustments from what I've seen so far. I'm trying again by disabling Joomdle in both Joomla and Moodle, then I'll turn them back on after the Moodle update. What happens is the system seems to get confused and doesn't know what to do as the functions need to be added back into the system, but I have no way of getting to the backend to add them as it won't let me log in. I think disabling everything and then turning them back on after the upgrade will most likely work.

Just remove the Joomdle folders from Moodle (Auth and Enrol) - Joomdle is gone from Moodle.

It may be faster for you to simply restore from your backup if this is an established implementation - ie since you say you are having all sorts of problems. Sometimes, it is easier to step back to a working environment and progress cleanly.

Thanks Chris, that is actually what I have been doing is pulling up backups. It is definitely a faster way to bring the system back to normal. Hopefully this attempt will allow me to upgrade to 2.8.2. I'm sure I'll get it this time. I've got faith :)
